Interview with the author

1. What is your novel about?

The novel is about life before, during, and after rape. Destroyed follows Bella through a lot of firsts as she slowly figures out how to step out of her shell. Her parents have sheltered her most of her life. In the midst of discovering herself, she is raped. Everything she believes is called into question, destroying all she has ever known.

2. What inspired you to write this story?

Rape is a very sensitive topic, but it’s an issue in our country, hell all over the world, that needs some serious attention. This does hit a little close to home for me based on my own experiences and that certainly played a factor in my drive to write this story. What inspired me the most was the problem I had with the uncertainty that often occurs as a result of a sexual attack. What I mean by this is there are issues with how we as a society view rape. In general, people would like to think an orgasm doesn't happen when a person is raped. They're wrong. It’s a physical bodily response. It can happen whether you want it to or not. Just like men can be raped, not just women. There’s a lot more I could say to this point, but I think you get the idea.

3. Why have you chosen this genre?

Honestly, I don't feel as if I chose this genre, but more as it chose me. I've always been fascinated with young adult/new adult books. I knew if I ever wrote anything, it would be intended for a young adult audience. I just didn't know where in YA my stories would fit. At least, not until I really sat back and read my own work the way a reader would. It was then that I realized exactly where it belonged.

4. What did you like the most about writing this book?

I loved creating the histories for each character. Building their lives allowed me to explore other countries and their cultures. It's kind of amazing to travel the world without leaving home (even though it's better when you get to explore it physically).

5. Which is your favorite character and why?

Jeremiah because he's overall good-hearted. He does a lot of stupid things, but in most cases he has the right intention. It just doesn't always work out the way he expects.

6. How many books is this series going to be?

I can't really answer this. I don't have a set number in mind. Simply put, as long as the people/characters of Rescate County, New Mexico have a story to tell, I will keep writing. However, I currently have at least six planned: Destroyed, Punished (releases June 1), Addicted, Betrayed, Burned & Forgotten. You can check out my website www.krysfenner.co for more on the release dates.
