Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout

WICKED - JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

PUBLISHED 8TH DECEMBER 2014

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

My review

*I received this eBook in exchange for an honest review.*
Ghost Moon Night is written by Jewel Allen. The genre is paranormal fantasy. The story is set in a small, Philippine village, Dasalin, which was cursed because of pirates. It’s about a seventeen-year-old boy, Antonio, who protects his family from the langbuans. The langbuans are flying creatures who kill everyone they come across on Ghost Moon Night, with their deadly touch. Antonio wants to defeat them.
I give this book 2 stars. I really wanted to like it, but somehow it didn’t do it for me. I started this book and then put it down for two weeks. But because I really wanted to know how it ended, I finished it. I found the beginning a little boring, however I liked Antonio from the first moment. The story was slow-paced and the action scenes were a bit short for me.
The thing I liked about this book, was its setting. I loved the description of the Philippines and I learned a lot about the country. The glossary at the end of the book was also informative and interesting. And the romance was sweet.
Overall, this book was just not for me.

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells Collection

A TIMELESS ROMANCE ANTHOLOGY: SILVER BELLS COLLECTION - LUCINDA BRANT, SARAH M. EDEN, HEATHER B.MOORE, LUANN BROBST SATHELI,  ANETTE LYON, BECCA WILHITE

PUBLISHED: 15TH OCTOBER 2014

Summary from Goodreads

Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells. Readers will love this collection of six historical novellas, all centered around the Christmas season with one thing in common: Romance.

In NY Times & USA Today’s bestselling author Lucinda Brant’s delightful novella, FAIRY CHRISTMAS, Kitty Aldershot is orphaned and forced to live on others’ charity. Offered a home under the generous roof of her relatives, the Earl of Salt Hendon and his countess, Kitty wants for nothing, not even the affections of Mr. Tom Allenby. But when Kitty stumbles across a letter written by Lady Caroline that reveals how Mr. Allenby would be ruined should he marry the likes of Kitty, she realizes she has been fooling herself all along. Kitty’s world crumbles around her as she recognizes she will forever be alone with no prospects at all.

Sarah M. Eden’s charming romance novella A CHRISTMAS PROMISE, Sean Kirkpatrick is trying to get to his new place of employment, Kilkenny Castle, in order to start as the new stablehand. His only requirement is to drive a team of high-spirited nags from Dublin to Kilkenny in a certain amount of time. Unfortunately he winds up in a muddy field, stuck, lost, and running out of time. He’s about to lose the job before he can prove himself capable of finishing his first assignment. When Maeve Butler arrives on the scene, Sean isn’t sure if she’s intent on rescuing him or bent on torturing him with her fiery wit and lovely dark eyes.

In Heather B. Moore’s enchanting novella, TWELVE MONTHS, Lucien Baxter’s best and most incorrigible friend, Will, dies unexpectedly, leaving behind his new bride and unborn child the week before Christmas. Will’s last request is that Lucien watches over Cora, not just as a benefactor, but as a husband. When Lucien does his duty and proposes to Cora, he’s turned down flat. But over the course of the next few days, Lucien discovers that marrying Cora wouldn’t be any sort of duty after all, but a matter of following his heart.

In Lu Ann Staheli’s sweet romance novella, A FEZZIWIG CHRISTMAS, Dick Wilkins and his best friend Ebenezer Scrooge have been looking forward to the annual Fezziwig Christmas dance for weeks. Ebenezer is practically engaged to Annabelle Fezziwig, and Dick hopes to start courting her younger sister, Pricilla. Once the dance starts, and Pricilla arrives, as pretty and charming as ever, Dick discovers that he’s not the only man vying for her attention. His best friend advises Dick that he has to win Pricilla’s heart, as well as her mother’s favor. Losing his heart has suddenly become very complicated.

A TASTE OF HOME, a captivating romance by Annette Lyon, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of Christmases past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers that her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday. William stays behind with her, and as Christmas Day approaches and her homesickness deepens, she discovers that perhaps he has changed in more ways than one.

Becca Wilhite’s entrancing novella, MY MODERN GIRL, follows Margie, who lands her dream job as a clerk at Macy’s department store in New York City. Margie might be new in town, but she’s determined to succeed and prove to Henry that moving to the city was the right decision. As the Christmas season approaches, Margie realizes that being a “modern girl” might not be all she had dreamed of and Henry might have more to offer than she ever imagined.

My review

*I received a free eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

‘Silver Bells’ is a collection of six historical novella’s. The stories are set in a wide variety of settings and all of them take place around Christmas. The main genre of this anthology is romance.

I give this book 3 stars. The things I liked the most are the writing style and the lightness of each story. However nothing too big happened. There was not enough suspense or excitement for me to give it 4 stars. But then again, the stories are novella’s, and therefore short.

My favourite short story would be ‘A taste of home’. I liked the reason for Will’s teasing.

Overall, this anthology is for those, who want something light and quick to read.

My review

*I received an eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

‘Behind the Stars’ is a story about a farm girl, Prentiss Pucket. After her graduation in two weeks, she and her boyfriend, Jackson, are going to get married and live a happy life on Jackson’s father’s farm. But suddenly, Prentiss is kidnapped. She wakes up in a sort of a camp with some people she recognises, inter alia, her brother. Jackson is nowhere to be seen. The people in the camp have to fulfil tasks in groups. Prentiss wants to escape badly. She knows she can’t just run away, so she will have to find another way. She agrees to do some extra work with the cows, so that she can befriend Gallatin, the brother of the leader of the camp, Cato. Gallatin may be able to help her escape. Prentiss and Gallatin start to develop feelings for each other.

I give this book 5 stars. The story is very unique, very different from other books. It gets more and more exciting as it continues. The suspense is nicely built. It’s a great concept. Prentiss is a great main character. She is very small, but smart, strong and brave. And of course, I really love Gallatin! <3 He is totally sweet! All the moments with him are so cute! They are adorable as a couple!

I advise this book to everyone who would like to read something light and sweet but interesting nonetheless!

Thank you so much, Leigh Talbert Moore for letting me read this awesome book!

My review

*I received an eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

‘Harvest Moon’ is the third episode of the book ‘Behind the Stars’. It starts where ‘Learning to Spy’ left off. This part focuses on the friendship of Prentiss and Gallatin. Prentiss wants to discover a way to run away and get information out of Gallatin. In the previous parts Prentiss had flashbacks about Jackson and her previous life, which weren’t there in this episode. She has a lot of questions and starts to develop feelings for Gallatin.

I give this book 5 stars. This was not the most exciting part, but definitely the sweetest of the three. It has some very cute moments with Gallatin. I am beginning to like him more and more. I am really getting impatient to discover the answers of the all the questions I have in my mind. And things are starting to change.

I really love the whole series so far! I can’t wait to read the next part and get to know Jackson better. I am really looking forward to it!

Thank you so much, Leigh Talbert Moore for letting me read this book!

My review

*I received an eBook copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.*

‘Learning to Spy’ is the second episode of the novel ‘Behind the Stars’. It continues where ‘Captive’ ended. Prentiss is still searching for a way out. Now she knows that she can’t just run away, so she will have to find another way. A new character, Gallatin, is introduced. He is the brother of Cato, who is in charge of the camp. Prentiss agrees to do some extra work with the cows, so that she can befriend Gallatin, who may be able to help her escape.

I give this book 5 stars. Not much does happen in this novella, but things get clearer. We come to know a bit more of what is happening. But the story is still as interesting as the first episode. It is full of mystery. Publishing the series in episodes makes it more exciting and it builds the suspense very nicely.

I really want to know what happens in ‘Harvest Moon’. I am looking forward to it. The wait will be painful.

P.S. I really like Gallatin, I hope he doesn’t turn out to be a bad character!

A cramp stabbing my ribs brought me back to the Here and Now. I was late, and last day or not, Dr. Green would fuss. “My assistants must be punctual,” he’d say. “It’s difficult being the only vet in a farming community.” I exhaled slowly as a bead of sweat tickled a path down the middle of my back, and I tried to keep the dirt out of my Keds. Back when the 911 service came through, most of these roads got numbers or real names besides “Shortcut to the Creek” or “Road Where the Broke-down House Used to Be.” But there were still a few like this one, “Old School Road,” that you only knew what to do with if you grew up in our little town of less than a thousand people. It didn’t matter, though. Strangers never stopped in Dabb Creek. That should’ve been my first warning. If I hadn’t been so focused on being late, I might’ve paid more attention to the strange man standing on the shoulder looking lost. Bad manners or not, I didn’t have time to give directions or to explain how far it was back to town. It wasn’t until I was up on him that I realized he was watching me, studying the pace of my feet. Then I saw the body on the ground. I skipped like a rabbit to the other side of the road, a scream forming in my mouth, but another man sprung up behind me. A rough cloth clamped over my mouth, and in two breaths, everything went dark. © 2014, Leigh T. Moore

The guards moved among us, placing dentist-office Dixie cups of what looked like water in front of everyone. A separate guard came to where I sat on the floor, clutching my knees. She lightly took my arm. “Please return to the table.” Her voice was smooth. “You’ve had a shock. Have some water.” I wasn’t about to drink anything they gave us. It was Day One all over again, only this time, it was Guyana. We were all being served the Kool-Aid. Next stop, mass graves. Stupidly, my friends and fellow prisoners had no such qualms. Didn’t anybody watch the History channel? I stared as they all took shaky sips without hesitation. “Just take a small sip.” The female guard was still with me. “It’ll calm you.” My throat constricted. My whole body was on revolt. Shaking my head, I didn’t meet her eyes. I only stared at the white cup of water. Braxton was at my side, and he drained his. What the hell made him do that? Did he want to die? Seconds ticked past and nothing happened. Nobody passed out. Nobody did anything strange—except forget what we’d just witnessed here. Braxton picked up his fork to finish his lunch. They all did. Like one of us had not just been taken out “swiftly and finally.” Only he had, and I was reeling from the shock. © 2014, Leigh T. Moore

Summary from Goodreads

"It’s a little known fact that witches are alive and well in Salem, Massachusetts . . .
They call themselves cheerleaders."

Allyson Peterson believes that being hanged by the Salem High Witches is the absolute worst thing that can happen. But when her powers, wrested from the trolls of ancient Sweden, manifest themselves, she realizes that a prank hanging by vindictive cheerleaders is the least of her worries.

Her Swedish grandmother shows up to help her through the worst part of all—surviving the Troll Trials and saving the guy of her dreams from a vengeance that has festered through-out generations.

The power is in her, if she can just get the magic right.

My review

*I received a free eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Spell Check is a story about witches and trolls, set in Salem. It tells the story of Allyson Peterson, who comes into her witching powers on her sixteenth birthday. That’s when all her wishes begin to come true. Her parents are divorced, which she doesn’t like at all and therefore wishes them to be together. Her parents disappear, she makes the whole cheerleading team sick and her Farmor from Sweden comes to help her with all her problems. Ally discovers that she is a Troll Kvinna and needs to be prepared for the trials on Halloween.

I give this book 3.5 stars. This was a fun, not too heavy, fantasy read based on folklore. The story had a fast pace and was well written. The characters were easy to relate to and the setting was appropriate.

However the story itself was a bit predictable and I found it somewhat childish. Some parts were too prosy, so they should be shortened. Spell check was not all fantasy, but it’s also about friendship, family, and a bit of bullying as well.

PS: Jake was so cute!

Heart of the Ocean by Heather B. Moore

HEART OF THE OCEAN - HEATHER B. MOORE

PUBLISHED: 2ND JANUARY 2013

Summary from Goodreads

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a handsome stranger . . . What more could Eliza Robinson want?

Except for maybe her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Maybrook is the last existing Puritan town, having survived centuries of outside influence. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

My Review

*I received an eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

"Heart of the Ocean is a historical romance. It’s about Eliza Robinson who was sent to live in Maybrook, a Puritan town, after she refused to marry Mr. Thomas Beesly. There she starts hearing a strange voice and soon after that her aunt Maeve, whom she was living with, dies. When she is charged with murder, she wants to know more about the situation. Meanwhile, she meets Jonathan Porter, who has helped her out several times. I give this book 3.5 stars. It’s a mystery, it’s a ghost story and has romance in it. It was a fun read. The thing I found the most interesting was that how Maybrook and New York City were mixed together. That was definitely one of the strong points of the novel. The characters were nice. Not only did I love Jon and Eliza’s relationship, but I enjoyed the interaction between Eliza and Gina as well. And Nathaniel.. Eliza kept declining his marriage proposal, but he just couldn’t understand. Some people may be irritated by his behaviour. But to be honest, I totally found him cute and adorable! Oh, how I love thee, Nathaniel! Eliza can live happily ever after with Jon, while I don’t mind having Nathaniel :D

However, there were some things that I didn’t like. For example, I felt that Eliza didn’t think too much about the voice she was hearing. I mean, if I would be in her place, I probably won’t be able to think of something else. I also find that it was dragged a bit in the middle and that the twists were quite predictable. Oh yeah, not to forget Thomas Beesly! He’s horrible! I despise that man and can’t stand him at all!

Overall, Heart of the Ocean is a well-written and entertaining novel. I enjoyed reading it.

I give this book four stars. I really, really liked it. It got me hooked from the first page and I read this book in one sitting. This book was fun and easy to read. It was fast-paced and had me interested the whole time. There was action and adventure. The story was well-written and the characters were likeable. Nicole, the main character, was brave and wanted to learn more about her powers. Lizzie, Nicole’s best friend was a very good friend and supported Nicole all the time. Austin, Nicole’s love interest was incredibly cute. There was a lot of mystery in this book. The world was fascinating. It has magic, possessed books, spiders, shadows, enchanted shadows, musical instruments, etc. in it. Somehow it reminded me of Harry Potter.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was unique and wonderful.

SWEET RECKONING - WENDY HIGGINS

PUBLISHED: 29TH APRIL 2014

Summary from Goodreads

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.

My review

The perfect ending! Totally worth the wait!

The Sweet Trilogy is my favourite series now. I loved the plot, I loved Anna and Kaidan's relationship, I loved this world of angels and demons, I loved the action, I loved the suspense, I love the way that Wendy Higgins write, I just loved everything. My life is complete now.

I am so sad that this trilogy has come to an end. But there is Sweet Temptation to look out to, which will have my name featured in it. OMG! I am so excited to read in Kaidan's POV! So happy I am, Wendy, you are so awesome!

Oh, and I love you so much, Kaidan! <3

Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins

SWEET PERIL - WENDY HIGGINS

PUBLISHED: 30TH APRIL 2013

Summary from Goodreads

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

My thoughts

So happy I am! And so in love with Kaidan! Sweet Peril was too good. The plot had so much suspense in it, that I couldn’t stop reading. Anna and Kaidan’s relationship is just wow. There are no words for the things I was feeling during this book and I didn’t know that books could make me feel like this.

Kaidan is so hot. I am on fire!
